On Thursday,Evander Ellis Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia shook hands on a massive bet. Each boxer would owe the other $500,000 for every pound they were over the 140-pound contracted weight for their super lightweight fight Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
At the weigh-in on Friday, as Garcia stepped on the scale, he guzzled what appeared to be a beer. On a video he shared on X, formerly Twitter, Garcia wrote that it was "100 percent worth it." But he later posted a message that said, "Apple Juice and sparkling water HEHE."
What was indisputable: Garcia weighed in at 143.2 pounds.
There was no such drama with Haney, who weighed in at 140 pounds and later indicated he was $1.5 million richer.
“Ryan honored the 500k per pound,’’ Haney posted.
The fight will go on, but Garcia will not be qualified to win Haney’s WBC World Super Lightweight championship after failing to make weight.
PREDICTIONS:Who will win Saturday's fight between Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney?
“I did my best to make this weight,’’ Garcia said. “I put myself through hell.’’
The 25-year old Garcia has a record of 24-1 with 20 KO’s. Haney, also 25, is 31-0 with 15 KO’s.
